About R.A.I.D.

Rochester Against Intoxicated Driving (R.A.I.D.) is a group of concerned citizens from the greater Rochester area dedicated to speaking out and educating the community about the devastating effects of driving under the influence of alcohol or other drugs, while at the same time creating a network of support for innocent victims whose lives have been forever changed as a result of intoxicated driving.

R.A.I.D. is a not-for-profit, all volunteer organization, formed in 1978 with the purpose of "deterring and preventing intoxicated driving through all available means". R.A.I.D. is an affiliate of RID-USA (Remove Intoxicated Drivers) and is considered one of the oldest anti-DWI activist groups in the nation. RID was one of the first programs in the country to begin putting names and faces to the victims of DWI. RID was formed in 1978 in Schenectady, NY by Doris Aiken after Karen and Timothy Morris, 17 and 19, the only Morris children, were killed by an intoxicated 22-year-old driver on Dec. 4, 1977.

Here in Rochester, R.A.I.D. was one of the earliest voices attempting to raise awareness about devastating effects of DWI. Bank records show that R.A.I.D. actually opened its first bank account in December 1979. For the past 27 years, R.A.I.D. has provided victim support and educational services to thousands of local citizens and has played a major role in reaching out and educating the community about the dangers of intoxicated driving and advocating for policies and procedures related to enhancing public safety and offender accountability.

Many R.A.I.D. members also share their personal stories at the Monroe County STOP-DWI Victim Impact Panel as well as speak at area schools and other community groups. Members often participate in community awareness activities such as the "Lights on for Life" event and Crime Victims Rights activities in April. R.A.I.D. members also provide input to the Monroe County STOP-DWI Technical Advisory Panel and the Monroe County Office of Public Safety.

Despite the long history and dedicated work of RAID in the Greater Rochester Community, intoxicated driving continues to threaten lives and devastate families. This is where we need your help. Membership in R.A.I.D. is open to all interested persons in the Greater Rochester area who are concerned with speaking out and preventing intoxicated driving. It is important to note that R.A.I.D. focuses exclusively on local activities specific to the Greater Rochester Community. All tax-deductible donations go to services, activities and programs that directly benefit our local community.
