Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks joined District Attorney Mike Green and representatives from Rochester Against Intoxicated Driving (RAID) and STOP-DWI to launch the 2005 Lights On For Life Campaign in Monroe County. The public awareness initiative urges motorists to turn on their car headlights during the day to show support for anti-drunk driving efforts and to pay tribute to victims of DWI. "We are here today for a very important reason - to promote education and understanding for all Monroe County residents about the dangers posed by drunk and drugged driving, particularly during the holiday season," said Brooks. "Through this initiative, we as a community will send an important message: to drive safely and to drive sober. At the same time, we will also pay tribute to those who have lost their lives." Each year, the period between Thanksgiving and New Year's is one of the most hazardous driving seasons due to alcohol-related incidents. The 2005 Lights On For Life Campaign is sponsored by the Monroe County STOP-DWI Program and Rochester Against Intoxicated Driving (RAID) as part of National Drunk and Drugged Driving Month. To launch Lights On For Life, police cars, ambulances, and other vehicles formed a motorcade in downtown Rochester. "In 2004, during the month of December alone, over twelve hundred people across America were killed as a result of drunk driving. Statistics like this prove that we must continue to inform our community about the dangers of drunk driving," concluded Brooks. Return to Events |
